Almost half of all Black investors are associate-level, out-numbering all partner-level Black investors. Only 2% of all partner-level investors are Black.
81% of all VC firms don't have a single Black investor. In a sample of 160 firms with more than 2 people, only 5 have at least 2 Black investor.
The data used for these statistics was gathered by Richard Kerby and was introduced in his article about the racial and educational backgrounds of venture capitalists (link). Why BLCK VC
BLCK VC was formed early in 2018 to connect, engage, empower, and advance Black venture investors by providing a focused community built for and by Black venture investors. Since its inception, we’ve worked to develop the community through both social and educational events focused on advancing Black investors.
The challenge is clear: only 3% of venture capitalists are Black, with even fewer controlling the $80B+ invested annually in the US. In the past few years VC has become more diverse, but slowly and minimally. The goal of this group is to increase the number of Black investment professionals in venture capital and build a community so that Black investors can help each other succeed. What is our goal? To turn 200 Black investors into 400 Black investors by 2024.
If you or your firm is currently looking to hire investors, there are several ways for you to find the most talented investors who are also diverse. There are many resources and tools to help you reach top-tier Black talent, some of which we have listed below.
BLCK VC is happy to serve as a resource to help your firm find and retain top Black investment talent. Reaching out to us, as well as other Black investors in your network, is a great place to start your talent search.
